Mobile Data Support
The Mojave Desert Ecosystem Program has taken the lead in assisting agencies utilize the latest developments in mobile technology to accomplish mission objectives.
- Enterprise Level Support
MDEP has implemented the following three solutions for enterprise level mobile data collection:
- The Pendragon Sync Server Enterprise edition. This product allows deployment of up to 150 handheld devices at one time to collect data using mobile device on either the Pocket PC or Palm operating system. These mobile devices can synchronize to a stand-alone PC or directly through the World Wide Web which then that data can be centralized in a Pendragon server at MDEP. Once this information has been transmitted it is available for authorized users to view the data.
- ArcPad from ESRI is their solution for the GIS analysis who would like to have the functions of a desktop in a mobile device for their in the field activities. MDEP houses Arch Server which supports the ArcPad extension which comes with each copy of ArcPad 8.0.
- ArcGIS Mobile is a task-driven enterprise GIS application for Windows Mobile and Windows tablet devices. MDEP maintains ArcServer Advanced for the Dept. of Interior for which fifty licensees of ArcGIS Mobile are available to signing out for use on data collection projects within the Mojave.
For more information on these solutions and services please contact us so we can discuss with you how best to achieve you mobile collection goals.

GIS Services
The Mojave Desert Ecosystem Program began as a way to centralize GIS data covering the entire ecosystem. It continues to be a leader in GIS implementation and an essential resource for government agencies in decision making processes. MDEP provides services and support in the following areas:
- Data Request - This form has been developed to process larger and more unique requests for data. By completing this document, an email is generated with information necessary to respond to the specific request.
- Cataloging - Good, solid high quality data does not do anybody any good if nobody knows it exists. MDEP utilizes several methods and software to ensure data can be easily found and consumed. MDEP makes sure it’s internal data is easily accessible while at the same time provides easy access to our connected partners through the cloud piping methodology (detailed below). The ESRI extension, Geoportal, leads the way in this effort along with several other 3rd party utilities.
- Standards - Standards help facilitate sharing and the development of quality geospatial data. MDEP makes a continuous effort to conform to standards endorsed by the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC). The program encourages the use of the FGDC standards with all of its partner agencies and provides input to partners on how to improve their data to match the same high standards in MDEP products.
- Cloud Piping
Current systems we are piped to:
- USGS: National Map viewer
- Navy: EIMS
- NGA: RDOG
Continue to check back monthly as this list grows |

GIS and Data Collection Tools
MDEP has partnered with others to develop and share various tools to aid agencies in data analysis or collection.
- Renewable Energy Suitability Modeling Tools - Developed by University of Redland's student Andrew Orr, this project focused on photovoltaic solar, concentrating solar, and wind energy as three main renewable energy methods pertaining to the Mojave area. The suitability tools this project produces allow user-defined, feature-importance weighting allocation to data within the model using a ordered weighted average technique.
- VGS - Vegetation/GIS Data System - The development of VGS is a cooperative effort between the University of Arizona, USDI Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and USDA Forest Service (USFS). The software has been or is being adopted for use by multiple government and university entities as well as private interests. It is widely used for vegetation inventories and monitoring, but is equally suited to a variety of ecosystem or environmental data requirements.
Digital Media Design
MDEP has collaborated with several agencies to create digital media to fulfill agency needs.
- Web Design - HTML, PHP, MySQL, Flash, Javascript, SQL are used along with Adobe software to create and/or maintain web sites on behalf of partnering agencies.
- Print and Poster Design - MDEP utilizes Photoshop, Illustrator and/or InDesign to create material for print. Among the equipment at the program is the HP Z6100ps plotter (Click to view) that is capable of printing on a variety of materials at very fast speeds. It prints widths up to 60 inches. Samples of agency work include posters for: CalTrans, BLM, NPS, DMG, San Bernardino County Museum.

- Additional media support as needed is available to include video and audio editing capabilities.
