The grid covers all of the Mojave Desert in California. The grid consists of approximately 202,275, 928m2 grid cells. Each grid cell is classified with a value that represents a temperature range from -12 degrees celsius to +4.8 degrees celsius. Purpose: The Mojave January Average Minimum Temperature grid was created for inclusion in the process steps for developing the Central Mojave Environmental Types grid which will guide first stage stratification in field sampling. The overall purpose of the Mojave Vegetation Mapping Project is to create a vegetation map for a portion of the Mojave Desert using the National Vegetation Classification (NVC) hierarchy. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: The grid was created by interpolating 30-year averages (1961-1990) of average winter temperature for the month of January from 104-136 climate stations. The jan_tmp_grid consists of approxiamately 202,275, 928 m2 grid cells. Each grid cell was reassigned a unique grid cell value during ArcInfo processing based on the average daily minimum January temperature. The approximate standard error for January minimum temperature is +/- 2.2 degrees Celsius. Interpolated values were based on regression between climate station data and latitude, longitude, and elevation, adjusted for deviations of nearby climate stations from overall relationships. Climate stations were sparse enough and autocorrelation distances short enough so that most estimates were solely on the linear regression models. The linear regression model for jan_tmp_grid is: T = 47.6 + 0 * longitude - 1.24 * latitude - .00421* elevation. Estimated autocorrelation distances (range of the variogram) for jan_tmp_grid is 70km.
