Desert tortoises are found throughout the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts of California, Nevada, Arizona, Mexico, and Utah. The Mojave desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii), which occurs north and west of the Colorado River, was listed as a threatened species in 1989.
